Nowadays my modelling activity is building and painting Warhammer 40K figures. Not too actively. But I'll show some pictures soon. My plan is to revive this blog. Just for fun.

6 months jump in time
Well, I missed you, my dear blog. Before you think I've quit modelling: no. I was working on the Panzer IV slowly during the recent months but had no urge to post here anything.
I had VERY high expectations of this Tristar kit (and of all Tristar kits, to be exact). My expectations were based on the past experiences on Planetarmor. The wonders what James Tainton, Adam Wilder and the other gurus were creating. Especially Mr. Tainton. His Panzer I models were stunning and the most stunning of all was a Tristar kit. That was the moment where my mind declared: this brand is the "überbrand".
After several weeks of building this Panzer IV... I've changed my mind. The kit itself is really beautiful. And based on my limited source materials it is 100% exact regarding sizes, shapes and parts. But I was annoyed how many parts had ugly flashes, sink marks. The fit is overall OK, but there were parts where grand-canyon-like huge gaps revealed themselves. Those had to be filled somehow. Putty or even stretched sprue was used:
But where my patience was completely lost: the tracks. Individual "working" track. I was first frightened when I saw it on the sprues though only two-point joints, no problem with cutting - I thought.
Later I was shocked on the amount of time needed to clean each track of flashes. And where I started to cry: clicking the links together... First sight: ohh man that is super-easy. But then, when the track was more than 6-7 links long: sssshit that fall apart. And the tiny pins were smoothed down.
I played with it for an hour or two. And then I just felt such an anger that indicated: I have to find some other way to solve it. The kit's tracks gone to the spare parts bin (it will be superb for some additional track to the hull, etc). And I ordered some replacement - I give a try to Miniart's working track. I hope that it will not be a wasted 4.000 HUF...
It took me ages to clean all these tiny parts. All had 4 attachment points, flashes and some of them had to be drilled - I measured and it took ~3 minutes to complete per piece. So with 200 links it took 10 hours overall. JUST THE TRACK. I will do wheeled vehicles only for a longer period from now. Now the build is considered ready and the primer is applied.
I have half a month to complete but now it seems possible - from next week I'm on holiday for two weeks. Plain grey paint will be applied - though I will do some research and maybe it will be a brown-grey camo pattern... and as usually, very minimalistic weathering. We'll see.

I call it done...
A kampány véget ért, a Chaffee (kitolt határidővel, de) készen lett, idei első cél kipipálva! Van még néhány apróság, amit meg akarok rajta csinálni, de ezek jó eséllyel a "soha-nem-fogom-megcsinálni" kategóriába esnek majd. A parancsnok és a vezető (fél)figurákat viszont már csak azért is elkészíteném, hogy kicsit a figurázást is gyakoroljam. Egyéb cuccok (lőszeres dobozok a géppuskához például) még lehet, hogy felpakolásra kerülnek. És egy egészen ideális világban ez is kapna egy jó kis olaszos dioráma-, de legalábbis vignette alapot is. Sohamár, ahogy a holló mondja.
De elégedetten fejeztem be, az a helyzet. A koszolásnál a lepattogzásokat szándékosan teljesen kihagytam, egy vadonat új, frissen frontra érkező járműnél nem láttam okát. Nem sajnáltam viszont a port, mert az olasz földutakon abból van rendesen.
And the campaign is finished, the Chaffee is ready. First goal achieved for 2019! Though there are some minor stuff to be done (with the very high probability of being never done). The commander and driver half-figures are on the desk at the moment - just to practice figure painting. Other stowage stuff might be included - and of course it SHOULD be finished with an Italian-like diorama or at least vignette. But now I'm focusing on the next vehicle and see little chance to do the dio...
Regarding the weathering: there is no scratching intentionally. An almost brand-new vehicle is not compatible with the chipping I think. The dust was replicated with AK's North-Africa Dust wash. I liked it and with several thin layers the accumulated dust deposits could be well simulated. I also tried AK's Dust Deposit product as well but that was way too much to me...

Decals and mistakes
Hát a matricák már akkor gyanúsak voltak, amikor még el sem kezdtem felragasztani őket... főleg, ami a motortér fölé kellett - volna. Én mindent megpróbáltam, gigantikus mennyiségű setter és softer került alá és fölé, de mindhiába, a végeredmény ocsmány lett. Íme:
Well, the decals were suspicious even before trying to glue them to place. Especially the one on the rear-upper hull. I tried everything, enormous amount of mark setter and mark softer was applied but finally the result was horrible.
Úgyhogy maradt a levakargatás, újrafestés, és végül, de nem utolsó sorban, a még mindig csúnya rész gondos elfedése mindenféle pokrócok, ládák és egyebek kupacolásával... Aztán egy kis Vallejo Model Air "Sand" segítségével elő-poroztam az alsó fertályt, és most már tényleg csak a koszolás, meg az apróbb részletek festése van hátra. Talán készen lesz péntek éjjelig... Ha nem, akkor kérek egy pár nap haladékot. Mit veszíthetek?
After scraping and repainting the surface was still very ugly so I decided to use the Ultimate Weapong Against Mistakes: STOWAGE. All types of tarps, boxes and so on... The latest step was to pre-dust the lower parts with Sand color (Vallejo Model Air) and I still have 4 nights to finish the weathering and the painting of small details (lamps, MG, etc...). Worst case: I will ask a few days to finish the campaign. What could I lose after all?

Chaffee painted
Végre eljutottam odáig, hogy az alapszínt felfújtam a Chaffee-re. Az AK Interactive OD modulation set-et használtam, olyan 75%-ban vagyok elégedett. A festék jó, nem száradt bele a festékszóróba, és a "középső", olive base árnyalatot leszámítva tetszik is. Az olive base azonban annyira elüt a többitől, annyival zöldesebb árnyalat, hogy nem is értettem, az AK ezt hogy gondolja? Sebaj, olive light és olive dark base kombinálással nagyjából megoldottam a helyzetet, és elégedett is vagyok a végeredménnyel. De sajnos nem volt kellőképpen pormentesítve a makett és a helyiség, így elég csúnya por-beragadásokkal kell megküzdenem. Szike, smirgli, bosszankodás...
Finally I've sprayed the color to the Chaffee. I used AK Interactive's OD Modulation Set. I'm 75% pleased with it. The consistency is OK, no clogging (in contrast with Vallejo Model Air) BUT the olive base color was too green compared to the other shades that I had to work it over with the OD dark base and the OD light shade. Unfortunately I did not was the model before painting (I never washed them) and some serious problem with dust particles arose - I have to correct it with sand paper and patience...

Build finished
Az egyik márciusi célom az volt, hogy befejezem az építés szakaszt, és jelentem, a sok márciusi célom közül egyedül ez teljesült! 31-én este tíz körül... aztán azóta rájöttem, hogy a vontatókötél hiányzik, de ezen most libbenjünk át elegáns mozdulattal. Összegezném az élményeket és tapasztalatokat a makettel kapcsolatban...
PRO:
- nagyon precíz illeszkedés
- szép és aprólékos részletek
- legjobb lánctalp eddigi munkáim közül (relatíve kevés munka, szép végeredmény, könnyű szerelés)
CON:
- gyakran átláthatatlan útmutató ábra
- néhol felesleges bonyolítás (PE elemek és nagyon apró műanyag darabok)
De mindent egybevéve nagyon szerethető makett, ha végtelen sok időm lenne, szívesen építenék még egyet. Már csak azért is, mert a Chaffee a legnagyobb kedvenc tankom a második világháborús járművek közül - a formája, a kompakt kinézete már gyerekkoromban megfogott (A halál 50 órája az egyik kedvenc filmem volt...). Áprilisban szeretném befejezni a festést, hogy májusra már csak a koszolás szakasz maradjon, és célba érjek a kampányban (június 1. a határidő).
One of my March goals was to finish the build of the Chaffee - and the only one March goal that was fulfilled was this one. Last night of March at around 22:00 :) since then I realized that the tow cable was forgotten but never mind. My summarized opinion of the kit is:
I loved
- the precise fit on all parts
- the well engineered parts with very nice and fine details
- the track was simply the best of all tracks I assembled so far - easy, quick and nice result
I did not love
- the manual... too many places it was confusing which part where to glue (see my post about the torsion bars for example). Too many times I had to cross-check reference photos to clarify...
- sometimes too complicated solutions (casting numbers from PE on front but cast in the plastic on other parts...) which do not add to details but frustrate and rob your precious time
Overall it is a very "loveable" kit - If I had infinite time I'd build an other one, too. My most beloved tank of WW2 is the Chaffee. It's design catched me as a kid when I watched the Battle of the Bulge (a several dozen times...).
Now... I start the painting and I hope to finish it in April - leaving the weathering phase to May and this way successfully finish the build before the Campaign deadline of 1st June.
PRO:

Chaffee progress
A futómű és a lánctalp kész, és egészen jól haladok a felépítménnyel is, kis szerencsével egy hónapon belül az építés része készen lehet, márciusra festés-koszolás is, de persze ne rohanjunk ennyire előre. A Bronco színvonalat hamar meg lehet(ne) szokni: hihetetlenül precíz illeszkedés, nagyon szép apró(lékos) részletek (bár azt nem értem, az öntvény számozást miért tudták sok helyen megoldani a műanyag fröccsöntésekor, és például miért kellene nekem mikronnyi méretű réz PE számokat ragasztanom a jármű elején?). A lánctalp külön nagy kedvencem: összesen ha 3-4 órát dolgoztam vele, akkor talán túl sokat is mondok, és "workable".
The running gear and track are ready. The hull is progressing nicely - I hope to finish the build in a month and another month is needed for the painting-weathering. But do not be too ambitious. Bronco did a fantastic job regarding the details and the fit of the kit. However I don't see the logic in some cases, for example why they molded casting numbers on some parts and why the expect me to glue supertiny PE casting numbers to the lower front part? My personal favourite is the track: really easy to cut and clean and it is workable without drilling and/or messing with pins, wires, etc. I love it.
Aminek kapcsán bizonytalan vagyok: a Black Dog felszerelését gondoltam hátra, de feltűnően túl nagy kupac lett belőle, lásd képek. Így aztán hiába gyönyörűen kidolgozott gyanta készlet, mégsem fogom feltenni a járműre, már csak azért sem, mert az a két-három kép, amit az eredeti, olasz hadjáratban szereplő Chaffee-kről találtam, egyike sem mutat ennyire "túlmálházott" járgányt... a kevesebb néha több, azt hiszem, jelen esetben is igaz.
One thing I am not sure about: the Black Dog stowage set. Beautiful molding, superb details but attaching that to the tank looks odd. It is way too much for me. I don't question that there were Chaffees in WWII with that huge heap of stowage but the 2-3 reference photos from the Italian campaign what I could dig up from the web show nothing comparable... so less is more will be true in this case, as well.
The running gear and track are ready. The hull is progressing nicely - I hope to finish the build in a month and another month is needed for the painting-weathering. But do not be too ambitious. 2019 Plan
Erre az évre nem tűztem ki túl ambíciózus terveket, elvégre a makettezés (egyelőre) csak hobbi, és nem megélhetési forrás (sajnos). Azt szeretném elérni, hogy legyen legalább két új kitűzőm az Armorama fórumon. Egyik a Chaffee, a másik még kérdőjeles, vagy egy új kampány, vagy pedig a Panzerjägert nevezem be az "Unfinished business 2018" kampányba, majd még meglátom, hogy leszek idővel eleresztve. De van még néhány fiókban lapuló, befejezetlen darab, elsősorban a Leopard 2A4... szóval nehéz volt válogatni, mi legyen az idei cél. Végül az alábbiakat tűztem ki:
1. Chaffee befejezése időben (+1 kitűző)
2. Panzerjäger I befejezése (esetleg kampányban, akkor +1 kitűző) + egy kis sivatagi vignette egy-két figurával, hogy végre már a dioráma készítés felé is tegyek egy óvatos lépést
3. Leopard 2A4 befejezése
4. Tetszés szerinti Armorama kampány befejezéssel együtt (+1 kitűző)
Aztán, ha még mindig maradt szabad kapacitásom, akkor lehet válogatni az alábbiakból:
- Marder III befejezés
- Gaz AAA befejezés
- Jagdpanzer IV diorámához Kettenkrad + figurák + maga a dioráma
- M106 befejezése
- Stuart dioráma (Makin-atoll) elkészítése
Bőven több, mint amivel akár csak 2020 végéig is végezni tudnék, azt hiszem...

But still has some treasure in the depth of the drawer - I hope that some of them could be finished this year. So, the goals in bulletpoints:
1. Finishing the Chaffee (+1 ribbon)
2. Finishing the Panzerjäger with a small vignette (maybe +1 ribbon)
3. Finishing the Leopard 2A4
4. Any of the 2019 Armorama campaigns (+1 ribbon)
And if I still have some spare time, I'll do the following pending projects:
- Marder III
- Gaz AAA
- Jadgpanzer IV dio with Kettenkrad + figures + buildings
- M106 mortar carrier
- Stuart diorama (Makin-atoll)
A lot more than I will be able to do until the end of 2020, I'm afraid :)

Chaffee start
I have started the Chaffee by Bronco. Amazing details but surprisingly a lot mould seams to clean. The suspensions are workable if you are careful enough with the glue. And if you understand the manual, not like me. The torsion bars have to be glued ONLY at their ends. I glued them all long. Bad luck. That will srew the position of the wheels but I will handle that somehow...

Grey matter
A november utolsó napjait átjáró szomorúság - naná, hogy nem sikerült célba jutnom a NaNoWriMo cselendzsben - csak úgy volt enyhíthető, hogy maketteztem egy kicsit. Lefújtam a Panzerjägert szürkére, nem moduláltam, csak a klasszik panelközepét-világosítós módszert alkalmaztam. Következő lépésekben a monoton hatást világos szürke kiemelésekkel akarom megtörni, hogy aztán az egészet össze-vissza porozzam, mert a sivatag állítólag igen poros hely, fényképek tanúsága szerint legalábbis.

That is why I've painted the PzJ with AmmoMIG grey shades - no modulation just the old-school panel lighting. Now I'll highlight some stuff with light greys to break the monotonous look and then I cover everything with desert sand dust, according to reference photos. :)

Pause in November
A november a makettezés helyett egy másik hobbiról szól, ezért is még két hétig biztosan nem fogok haladni semmivel. Belevágtam az egy hónapos kihívásba, 50.000 szó regényvázlat egy hónap alatt, november 30. éjfélig. Kis lemaradással, de azért változatlan lelkesedéssel küzdök, mint az egyszeri malac a jégen...
I'm doing the NaNoWriMo currently so there will be nothing publishd (and modelled) in the next half of the month. It is a tough challenge but I'm only little behind the goal so I have chance to finish the 50 thousand words by 30th November.
I'm doing the NaNoWriMo currently so there will be nothing publishd (and modelled) in the next half of the month. It is a tough challenge but I'm only little behind the goal so I have chance to finish the 50 thousand words by 30th November.

Hosszú vajúdás után végre összeraktam a járművet. Már csak annyi hibádzik, hogy ha a festéssel készen vagyok, akkor a rádió drótozását be kell fejeznem, azt is lefesteni, és összeragasztani a tornyot, a löveget és a jármű testet. De egyelőre örvendezzünk annak, hogy az építés 99%-ban készen van, jöhet a festés. Az apróságok, amiket ebben a posztban változtatásként célul tűztem ki magam elé, mind sikeresen megoldásra kerültek.
It was a long time to build it but the vehicle is 99% ready. The only remaining build task is to apply the wiring to the radio after finishing the general paint session. Following that I will glue the upper and lower hull together with the gun. I am pleased as I successfully applied all the changes what I set as a goal in this post to replicate the No. 35 vehicle as truly as possible...
